New Project : Music Video

    Music Video

We just finished our final project for our commercial. This entire experience was pretty good overall. Our commercial for Vans was in my opinion was the best commercial I saw from the class. The things that worked for us very well is to not use the editing program that's offered here on campus. The program they use is just too slow to use and our computers aren't the best either. Instead we uploaded our footage on to Google Drive and just edited on our smart phones. This was a much faster process and due to the simplicity of smartphones, we were able to do things more than we thought possible. Another thing, while it is a requirement, story boarding did not work for our project. We made a story board but when we started to film, more ideas came into our head which made us stray away from our original storyboard. Other than that, our commercial was a success. Now we are transitioning into shooting our next project. This project is going to be a music video.

The song that we will choose for our music video is going to be Day n Nite by Kid Cudi. The reason we selected this song is due to the fact that its a good song overall. The song had no explicit language and just a really chill song. This song was very popular when it was released back in 2008. Its considered to be a part of the Rap/Hip-Hop genre. While this song already has a music video, we are going to take a different approach on the visuals. The music video for this song shows Kid Cudi, walking around in the city and drawings appear as if he were seeing it. This music video conveys the figurative aspect of the song, but I think my and my partner will take the lyrics more literal. The editing is very present in the actual music video and it features lots of tracking shots. Because me and my partner haven't really decided what our music video is going to feature exactly, I can't tell you what type of editing our video is going to have.

Rap/Hip-Hop is a common genre now in the 21st Century, because of this, there is now certain conventions that a Rap/Hip-Hop music video should have.

1. Costumes that are usually featured in Rap/Hip-Hop is designer clothes for men and minimal clothing for women to show wealth.

2. While lighting varies for each different music video, usual lighting is very bright and visible to clearly see every single thing in the music video.

3. Usually for the acting of a typical rap music video is just the artist of the song either lip-syncing his song or they sometimes hire actors to portray the message of the video.

4. Makeup for a typical rap music videos is very minimal or used to make the people in the videos look as natural as possible.

5. Props for a usual rap music video varies on the song. In reality, the props featured in the music video helps to portray the underlying message of the song.

6. Set design for a typical rap music video is usually somewhere exotic. This is done so rappers can show of their wealth and portrays to the audience, "Look at me, I'm at some cool place!"

While there are conventions in Rap/Hip-Hop music video, I doubt me and my partner will actually follow the conventions of the genre because, I don't usually enjoy watching these type of videos. So for our project we will stick to making a nicer music video.
